Winter Tourism Excursion – Lake Cargelligo

Round Hill National Park Birdlife

Round Hill National Park is an irregularly shaped 2500 km2 tract of land in western New South Wales, and is adjacent to the Nombinnie Nature Reserve. These areas are hotspots for mallee birds. It lies approx. 29 kms from the small town of Mount Hope. I camped at Lake Cargelligo, from there I travelled along the Euabalong road some 13 km out of town, past Murrin Bridge and then another 3 kms to the Tjunction with Wallenthery Road, then a left onto Mount Grace Road, a right onto Round Hill Road and followed it, subsequently entering the Round Hill National Park

Laughing Kookaburra at Mollymook Beach

 

Possibly Australia’s most iconic species. It’s incredible laughing song, (raucous cackle) is a feature of the dawn chorus. If a few birds join the chorus, it becomes quite a racket. It is one of the larger members of the Kingfisher family.

Two large great birds sit up in a tree,

And they look as solemn as birds can be,

With very big beaks, and half shut eyes –

Did you ever see anything look so wise?

Hark! All on a sudden one of the them

Bursts out laughing! ‘Ha, ha! Ho heel!

The other wakes up and opens his bill,

And his eyes are opening wider still,

He gives his feathers a shimmer and shake

Just to be sure that he’s wide awake,

And then, as if some funny thing he saw,

Joins chorus, with ‘Ho, ho, ho! Ha! haw!’

‘Why are they staring so?’

See – there is a black snake down below!

Gliding along thro’ the dry brown grass –

But not very far will his safety pass;

Those solemn old birds are watching him go,

And chuckle for joy – ‘Ha Ho! Ho Ho!’

Whales – Mollymook

 

Whale sightings from Mollymook Accommodation

During these past couple of weeks, Mollymook accommodation guests have been treated to some spectacular sight seeing, especially whilst seated enjoying the view from there deck chairs at Mollymook Beach Waterfront.  
May and June are the two months the whales are sighted off Mollymook heading north during the whale migration breeding season.
Whilst, September – November is generally the best season to watch the Humpback whales and their newborn, as they pass by on their journey back to their feeding grounds at the south pole. This is the time when they generally come in very close and perform their acrobatic displays of tail waving and belly flopping.
These are the two periods popular among tourist, visiting from Canberra, NSW Highlands and Sydney.
There are reportedly 43 species that travel through Australian waters with the Humpbacks and Southern Rights the most popular in our area, as these two species generally follow a similar route. 
June 1 & 2, Mollymook Beach Waterfront guests upon their departure reported a large number of whale sightings each day.
June  3 & 4 Mollymook Beach Waterfront weekend guests likewise reported a large number of whale sightings each day from their balcony.
June 5, incoming Mollymook Beach Waterfront guests reported further sightings from their waterfront accommodation. They later travelled to the Warden Head, Ulladulla lookout where they counted 40 other people also enjoying the whales passing by, heading north.

The ‘Altar Wine Bar’ is a MUST visit for those who enjoy fine wine accompanied by a nice selection of ‘small bites’. To add to the ambiance, live music is also usually available in this picturesque setting situated on the ‘Old Church at Milton’ property. 
This was our first visit with many more planned in the future. So relaxing!

Accolades of this ‘Altar Wine Bar’ have travelled interstate with recent guests from Victoria placing it on their must do list.

Victorian food critic, Nicholas P. wrote: “To sample the food creations that Executive Chef Matthew Upson (Gwylo restaurant and formerly Tallwood Restaurant) brings to the table is a menu that is sophisticated yet simple, honouring the flavours of each and every ingredient” (Mollymook News)

Matt Upson Gwylo’s head chef has a very impressive culinary profile, having trained in South Australia under Cheong Liew, Simon Bryant and Maggie Beer among others.

In 2010 Matt moved to the NSW South Coast and opened the ‘Merry Street’ restaurant at Kioloa. In 2013 he moved to Mollymook and opened, what became one of the best restaurants in the area, Tallwood. His latest creation is Gwylo. It opened in Sept. 2020, and in such a short space of time, has become a stunning success story.

Feedback from recent ‘Fine Dining’ guests staying at Mollymook Beach Waterfront commented; “Gwylo was the highlight of their week in Mollymook”.

Urbanspoon review: “This little unassuming place tucked away in the picturesque hills of Milton in NSW is well worth a visit. The restaurant so pretty and the setting is delightful. You will not be disappointed.

The service is relaxed and would put any top restaurant in Melbourne to shame. But it is food that shines.

Do not leave with out having tried the middle eastern spiced duck spring roll. They are totally moorish. My rabbit stew with polenta was generous, rich and lip smackingly tasty. Followed by a warm chocolate tart with salted caramel ice cream and praline. Like a gourmet snickers. Yum!

I was so satisfied I could have dropped into a food coma”.

Try it! There was nothing not to like- even the marbelled butter served with the near perfect bread was delicious – as were all the sides. Clever chef”.

2013 NSW Tourism Award results, Mollymook Milton Ulladulla

SYDNEY: The best tourism businesses of the state were named at the highly acclaimed 2013 NSW Tourism Awards Dinner and Ceremony at Royal Randwick Thursday night November 28, 2013.

Spanning 32 categories including Major Festivals and Events, Adventure Tourism, Heritage and Cultural Tourism and Business Tourism, the NSW Tourism Awards celebrate the diverse and significant achievements of tourism operators, who collectively contribute billions of dollars to the state’s economy.

The Awards are a major program of the Tourism Industry Council NSW and are supported by Destination NSW.

Entering the NSW Tourism Awards Hall of Fame this year (where operators have won gold for three consecutive years) included Jenolan Caves: Written in Stone for Heritage and Cultural Tourism, Moonshadow Cruises for Major Tour and/or Transport Operators, and Sydney Harbour YHA for Backpacker Accommodation.

The Minister for Tourism and Major Events, George Souris, whilst congratulating the winners, spoke of the key role the tourism industry plays in NSW’s economy.

“Tourism currently contributes more than $50,000 every minute to the NSW economy, reflecting an increase of over 6% since 2011. Tourism is the lifeblood of many of our State’s regional towns, and we are committed to promoting tourism in the regions, as well as supporting events that create local jobs, providing a boost to regional economies even further,” said Minister Souris.

Mollymook Milton Ulladulla’s sole finalist was Mollymook Beach Waterfront who was awarded silver in the Hosted Accommodation category. Gold went to Honeycomb Valley Farm – Farmstay on the NSW North Coast and bronze was awarded to Crystal Creek Meadows of Kangaroo Valley.

Ulladulla Harbourfeast 2013

Showcased on Saturday November 9, 2013 was the regions best food and wine at the biannual “Harbourfeast” on Ulladulla harbour accompanied by live music and cooking demonstrations by the regions top chefs preparing fresh local produce.

Popular restaurants represented included Rick Stein-Bannisters, Tallwood Eatery, Millards Cottage and Cupitts as well as Citrus Catering and Telly’s Mostly Lebanese catering. Wineries were represented by Coolangatta Wines, Cupitts and Bawley Vale Estate with live music from local musicians that included Sarah Date, Chris Rulewski and the popular Pigeon House Jazz Band.

Celebrity chef “cook off” was awarded to Amanda Finlay and her daughter Kiah, whilst the Bawley Vale Estate was awarded wine of the show with its unwooded chardonnay.

David Johnson from the South Coast Leisure Times praised the organisers and certainly the sponsors for making these local events such a success.

The Mollymook Bogey Hole at Mollymook Beach

Mollymook Bogey Hole Attraction

Tourist things to do, visit the Mollymook Bogey Hole, a beautiful natural feature on the southern end of Mollymook beach. It is nestled between the famous “Golfie” surfing reef break, Beachside Golf course and Mollymook Beach’s southern headland, access is via a short walk around the headland or by vehicle along Riversdale Avenue and Burleigh Drive to the Collers beach parking area.

It is a large tidal rock pool ideal for swimming with an outer shelf area ideal for snorkeling. Situated in a sheltered area it has been historically an attractive place for sun bathers and picnics. It is believed that the name “Bogey Hole” is from an Aboriginal word for “Bathing” and was used by Aboriginal people for 100’s or perhaps 1000’s of years as a place to “Bathe” and trap fish.

Because of its attraction to tourist, photographers and locals who regularly frequent this picturesque area, volunteers sponsored by Mollymook Beach Waterfront in association with “Clean Up” Australia, keep this popular “Bogey Hole” area clean on a daily basis.

Photo’s dating back to the early 1900’s show Collers Beach area as a popular picnic area and later in the 1960’s it became recognised for its now famous surfing reef break.

Many of our Mollymook Beach Waterfront accommodation guests had been commenting in glowing terms about the Rick Stein signature dish, the ‘Fish Pie’. That became our obvious choice to celebrate our wedding anniversary at the Rick Stein restaurant Mollymook , and it was magnificent!

Eight days later we returned for fine dining at Rick Steins and again chose his signature dish – the ‘Fish Pie’, the salmon, blue eye trevalla, snapper, scallops, mushroom and prawns with a breadcrumb and parmesan topping made for the perfect meal. January 2014
